There's Hope in every dollar

1 in 3 people are touched by cancer - we are doing our best to help each one. We are the second largest non‑government cancer research funding charity in New Zealand, and every cent of every dollar donated is applied to the work of the trust.

Fighting cancer

The Genesis Oncology Trust is a registered Charity with the New Zealand Charities Services (registration CC23672), making all donations tax refundable.

The Trust provides grants to doctors and scientists conducting ground-breaking cancer research, and to medical and scientific cancer-control personnel for their professional development and education.

The Genesis Oncology Trust invites applications for grants to support New Zealand-based initiatives that will lead to improvements in the prevention, detection, diagnosis or treatment of cancer, or improvements in palliative care.

Visit our ‘Apply for a grant’ page for application details.

A little history Read on

  • Genesis Oncology Trust was established 2002 by New Zealand energy company Genesis Energy who endowed the trust with $6.5 million between 2002 and 2003.
  • The key objectives of the Trust are the promotion of research and training in cancer-control and palliative care.
  • From 2004 to 2015 the work of the Trust was primarily funded by Genesis Energy Customers, who donated to the Trust via their energy bill. This allowed the capital to grow and income from these investments now covers the modest operating expenses of the Trust and funds some research, and professional education of medical and research personnel.
  • By the end of 2015 more than $12.2 million will have been applied to the fight against cancer.
  • The Trust is now an independent and financially secure charity, but to continue the level of funding required to keep New Zealand at the forefront of cancer research public donations are essential, and gratefully received. Every cent of every $ is applied to the work of the Trust.
