The Genesis Oncology Trust is a registered charitable trust and is a flagship sponsorship for Genesis Energy.  It represents  a major community project established to assist all New Zealanders in the fight against cancer.

Genesis Energy established the Trust in 2002 with a contribution of $3.4 million, as a result of customer power savings during winter 2001. A further $2.1 million was donated in 2003.
The Trust is comprised of six trustees representing Genesis Energy and the medical, strategic and business aspects of Oncology. The key objectives of the Trust are the promotion of research and training in cancer-control and palliative care.

The Bruce Blue Award 

Following the sad death of Genesis Energy’s Regional Manager Bruce Blue from cancer in early 2004, Genesis Energy management establishd the Bruce Blue Award. A sum of $1 million, has been invested with the Trust for this purpose. Each year the Board of Trustees make an award to an outstanding applicant to honour Bruce’s memory.

The Murray Jackson Clinical Training Fellowship

This award was named in recognition of the vision of the founding Chairperson of the Trust, Mr Murray Jackson. It was Mr Jackson who originated the idea of a Genesis Energy-sponsored charity to fund cancer-control research and education, and whose commitment and drive during its formative years laid the strong foundation for the Trust.

The John Gavin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Professor John Gavin has been associated with the Trust since its inception and drew up the blueprint for its structure and grant assessment processes. John Gavin is an accomplished scientist and teacher and the annual Postdoctoral Fellowship award was named in recognition of his contribution to the Trust.
