The Genesis Oncology Trust invites applications for grants to support New Zealand-based initiatives that will lead to improvements in the prevention, detection, diagnosis or treatment of cancer, or improvements in palliative care.

These initiatives can be biomedical, clinical, epidemiological or psychosocial and may relate to:

  • Education and training of students embarking on careers related to cancer care and/or cancer research
  • Continuing professional development of individuals involved in cancer care and/or cancer research
  • Hypothesis-based clinical or biomedical research in the field of cancer prevention, cancer treatment or the delivery of palliative care.
  • Other projects or activities related to cancer.

Closing dates for applications are:

  • Applications for the Professional Development Award round March 2010 closes 19 March 2010 – maximum award of $3,000 per grant
  • For 2010 the application closing date for Research Grants, Professional Development Awards and Special Purpose Grants is August 20th 2010, and October 8th 2010 for Fellowships and Scholarships.

Research Grants

Contributions toward hypothesis-based clinical or biomedical research projects in the fields of cancer prevention, cancer treatment or the delivery of palliative care.

Professional Development Awards

To allow established cancer researchers and cancer care professionals to travel and participate in advanced training programmes or scientific meetings that will enhance their professional competence or extend their range of skills.

Two Professional Development Award rounds are run each year. The maximum individual value of each grant in the March Professional Development Award grant round is $3,000 and is primarily intended to cover conference travel. Outcomes of the March Round will be announced in early May.
 

Larger amounts for professional development initiatives may be awarded in the main grant round which closes in late August each year, with outcomes announced in early December. Retrospective awards will normally not be considered in either round.

Special Purpose Grants

Contributions toward research and development, or activities that will improve the quality of cancer care in New Zealand.

Postgraduate Scholarships

Intended to allow a Masters or Honours graduate student to undertake a maximum of three years study towards a doctorate degree in a cancer-related field. The stipend value is $25,000/year plus University fees for an approved course.

Murray Jackson Clinical Training Fellowship (Medical)

The Clinical Training Fellowship will be awarded to a medical graduate committed to a clinical career with a major involvement in cancer medicine. It is intended for oncology specialists so that they can enhance their practice and expertise through further clinical training and research and thus contribute to improved patient outcomes in New Zealand. The Fellowship may be combined with advanced clinical training in cancer medicine, and the research component should normally be at least 50%. The expectation is that at the end of the Fellowship the successful applicant will become established in clinical practice in New Zealand. Download MS Word application forms:

John Gavin Postdoctoral Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for the support of outstanding graduates who have recently completed a degree at doctoral level and who propose to conduct research in scientific fields of relevance to cancer control. The purpose is to provide personal support for two years of research, usually to widen their experience in a different institution. The expectation is that at the end of the Fellowship they will become established as independent researchers in New Zealand. Download MS Word application forms:
